Mole removal

Mole removal is performed if:
•Mole can potentially become malignant;
•Mole is malignant – the patient is diagnosed with skin cancer (melanoma);
•Mole is not aesthetically desirable.

Mole examination and the assessment of its level of risk by a dermatologist is crucial – it can prevent the development of skin cancer, which can occur in an existing mole, as well as in previously unaffected skin. Timely dermatologist’s visit is a prerequisite for maintaining health!

Symptoms of skin growths and moles that require immediate attention are:

Surgical mole removal

Excision is one of the most popular mole removal methods. The excision is made with a safety margin of a couple mm up to few cm, depending on the skin growth. This method is ideal for examining the mole under a microscope (histologically) in order to determine the nature and type of the mole.

Surgical mole removal removes the mole completely. This method has the lowest mole recurrence rate.

Laser mole removal

Laser procedures are usually chosen for simple cases, i.e. when the mole is in the upper layers of the skin and clearly visible. Commonly used types of lasers are:

Cons of laser mole removal

If the patient has not had a tissue sample of the mole taken for microscopic examination (biopsy), it is impossible to determine whether the mole was malignant or benign.

Mole removal with laser also prevents the determination of the true size of the mole.

Mole removal with liquid nitrogen

Mole removal cryotherapy. The cryosurgery method is suitable for superficial, benign moles. If a mole is formed in the deeper layers of skin, it may require aggressive freezing, which may result in deep tissue damage and unpredictable scarring. Cryodestruction of the tissue prevents its histological examination.

Follow-up appointments with a dermatologist for mole examination are advised in 3-12 months after the mole removal, especially if recurrent skin growth proliferation is suspected, or the removed skin growth was malignant. Within 5 years, 1 in 2 patients develops new moles.

Pre-operative care prior to mole removal procedure

Post-operative care following mole removal procedure

If the wound is dressed with tight, contractive bandages (strips), the bandages must be replaced if fallen off.

The stitches must be removed on the dermatologist’s appointed date. After the stitches have been removed, the strips must be worn for additional 1-3 weeks.

Where to remove moles?

It is recommended to turn to dermatologist-surgeon for mole removal. Moles can be removed by oncology centre specialists or plastic surgeons, but dermatologist is the only specialist that has expertise in skin growth treatment, evaluating the patient’s skin’s overall condition. The procedure is not complicated, and the patient does not have to remain under medical supervision after it, being dismissed to return home immediately.
