Removal of papillomas

Papilloma can be a symptom of certain skin cancers and precancerous conditions – it is not advised to postpone an appointment with a dermatologist for papilloma examination, removal and treatment.

Treating papilloma

Papillomata are benign skin growths that can contain cells infected with papilloma virus, which can facilitate further spreading of the infection. The uneven, rough surface with its weakened defensive barrier is favourable for development of infectious processes.

If the skin growths are located in areas prone to traumatisation, they are likely to change their appearance, increase in size. If papillomata are not treated, they can become malignant, posing a serious threat to one’s health (i.e. organ function degradation, closed respiratory tract, urinary tract, cervix, etc.).

When treating papillomata, generally two methods are applied:

Conservative treatment method – the cells of the growth are destroyed by the patient’s immune system. Usually, the immune system is stimulated with orally administered medicine that boosts the immunity, “urging” the organism to eliminate the skin proliferation.
Papilloma removal – the fastest method of treatment.

The treatment methods are commonly combined.

Papilloma removal methods

The removal method is determined by the patient’s skin characteristics, the size of the skin growth or growths, their location and the final diagnosis.

Freezing of papilloma or cryodestruction. For an effective destruction of the growth, a certain temperature must be reached. If the freezing is performed slowly and without reaching the temperature required for destroying tissue (common when using methods available for purchase at the pharmacy), papillomata can reappear, multiply and increase in size. Clinically performed cryosurgery not only destroys the growth but also acts like a vaccine against the infected tissue.
Electrocoagulation of papilloma – the removal of the growth or cauterisation with electric current. Accurate diagnosis is mandatory since the tissue after the procedure cannot be histologically examined (it cannot be determined whether the growth was malignant).
Removal of papilloma with lasertherapy – different types of tissue have different ability to absorb a certain wavelength of light; the energy emitted destroys target tissue, leaving other tissue unaffected.
Surgical removal of papilloma – bigger skin growths are surgically removed together with their base. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, and the wound requires stitches.
Medical removal of papilloma – topical agents that stimulate and strengthen the immune system, as well as exfoliating agents with tissue-destructing properties.

Removal of papilloma on children

For children, same as for adults, the removal method is determined by the characteristics of the skin growth and the final diagnosis. Administering the anaesthesia to children prior to the removal procedure is slightly troublesome – it is advised to choose the conservative therapy method instead (gradual removal of the skin growth, stimulating the activity of the immune system in fighting the skin growth).

If the papillomatous growth on the child or infant has to be removed, preparing the young patient for the procedure is very important – getting enough sleep, having calming teas or remedies prior to the procedure, also administering pain killers or anaesthetics under the supervision of the dermatologist.

Removing papilloma at home

Various treatments for removing papillomata available at the pharmacies for home use cannot ensure the potency required – the papilloma is not removed in the deeper layers of the skin, leaving the potential for the development and spreading of the infection.

Natural remedies for removing papilloma act only locally. This treatment method can be incompatible with the type of the growth, interfering with timely treatment.

It is important to bear in mind that any home remedy is suitable for removing the visible part of the growth only, leaving the deeper tissue unaffected. If the cause of the papilloma (e.g. immune deficiency) does not get identified and treated, skin growths can become malignant, causing serious harm to one’s health.

A dermatologist is the only specialist that is knowledgeable in skin’s normal and pathological conditions, incl. skin diseases and growths. Only an accurate diagnosis and identified cause of the papilloma formation can ensure the right treatment course and the choice of the most suitable removal method.
